We entered Google's annual "Google Doodle" competition where children all around the world get a competition sheet with the outline of "Google" printed on it. Each year there are different themes for you to draw. This years theme is "My Perfect Day". We got the sheet and then we started to draw our doodles as the letters. But the letters have to be styled in the child's "My Perfect Day". Our doodles are shown below in the slideshow. The winning doodle will be put up on Google's home page for 24 hours. They will also receive a laptop for them and their teacher. Today on the 18 of December 2014 we had the final of tables knock out the finalists were Sean, Ben, Luis and our grand winner Dominick Amon. She taught us how to weave and tie knots. She helped us to use our imaginations creating objects from various recyclable materials. It was an enjoyable day. We produced some interesting creations which you can see in the slideshow below. We watched the Monty the Penguin video for the John Lewis ad 2014. We got pictures from the ad and we put them in order telling the story. We put the pictures on display on our notice board outside class. The story is about about a boy called Sam and penguin called Monty. They spend a lot of time together. They love to play, walk and do other things together. On the way home on the bus Sam realises Monty is lonely. So Sam gets Monty a girl penguin to play with for Christmas. For our November project, we learned about electricity and simple circuits. Mr. Minnock taught us how to make a simple circuit . The project we had to make something including a simple circuit. First we had to get into groups of two, three or four. But some of us decided to go on their own. Then at home we all had to make a plan of make a plan for our projects. Of course we had some help from our parents, our siblings and other relatives and friends. Some of us had to get stuff like light bulbs, battery holders and others. When we got all of the stuff we started to make the projects. Conor O,Donohoe's Dad sent us a lot of wires to use on the projects which we were all delighted with. We will have an exhibition on Friday which everyone can come and see our work. On Thursday last we visited our Reading Buddies in Senior Infants. We began by helping them with their Art which involved making mattresses for a bed from the story ' The Princess and the Pea'. On Friday we all went Bowling in Base as part of National Bowling Week. We got lifts down from Parents in cars. When we got there we met Keith from Base who divided us into 8 teams. The bowling was great fun. We were all trying to get Strikes. 8 boys from the class got strikes and lots more got Spares. The hour went really fast. We all look forward to going bowling again some day in the future. Tonights Maths homework is to answer Q.s 12 - 30 on the sheet below. Today we isited senior infants to meet our old reading buddies from last year. We talked with them, played a few games with them and gave them a tour of our website. We sang Let it Go and some of them joined in. We showed them the video of our Halloween Party and the monster Medley songs. We had a good time. It was good to see them after such a long time. Today was the last day for shoe boxes. The boys in all the classes in the school brought in over 140 shoeboxes. They were collected by Team Hope today to be sent to children in poorer countries around the world. Mary Shaw our old SNA organized all the shoe boxes. We went down to see the collection before they were taken away. They looked really Christmassy! We have pictures below on a slideshow. We think the children who get the presents will be really happy. Watch here to see last year the children in Swaziland opening their boxes. Yesterday we made our own circuits with switches. We were trying to light a light bulb with a battery holder, a battery, a cork, 2 thumb tacks, 3 wires and a paper clip. We used all of these objects to make the circuit. We took pictures of boys making the circuits and finishing the circuits. This will help us make our eletrical projects. This week there is Free Bowling on offer for all schools in the country. We will be going to Base in Celbridge on Friday to take up our offer. We will leave the school at 1.15 pm and return at 2.15 pm. We will need lifts up to base on the day. If any parents are available to give a lift would you please leave a comment below. I will see the comment but I wont publish it!
Today we learned how to make a simple circuit using a battery, two wires and a bulb. The bulb lit up and stayed lighting. Tomorrow we will discover how to make a switch to turn the light on and off!
Over the next few weeks boys will take on a project which will involve making an electrical circuit with a switch. Boys can work individually or in groups of 2 or 3. All the projects will go on display towards the end of November and everyone will be invited to come in to view the exhibition. Over the last few years other 4th classes have put on similar exhibitions. Judging by the boys reaction so far this years projects will be equally as good as any over the last few years! To see examples of the projects from recent years click on 2013 or 2012. Today we watched the Team Hope video of kids in Swaziland opening their presents. They seemed very happy to be opening their presents. We felt proud of ourselves to be playing a part in such a wonderful project. To see the video click here
Yesterday we started learning about electricity. Through out November we will be exploring electricity and working on some projects to show how electricity works.
