One of the features of rang4Snam in 2015 /2016 has been the musical exploits of various boys in the class. From the Christmas song to the Peace Proms to performances at the Communion and Confirmation ceremonies, all the boys have excelled. Today we were treated to another exhibition by our tin whistle player Brian McBride. Rehearsing at the moment with Mrs Fleming for the end of year graduation ceremony, we recorded Brian and Mrs Fleming playing the tunr Lucky In Love which you can listen to by clicking on the soundcloud link below.
https://soundcloud.com/rang4snam/lucky-in-love/s-regks Enjoy! Euro 2016 fever has gripped the class in recent weeks. All hopes are resting on the Boys in Green, that they might go all the way. To make the competition a little more interesting the boys will each complete projects on the various countries taking part. Projects can be hand written or alternatively presented in Word, Powerpoint etc to be displayed on our Euro 2016 Projects Page on the Website.
Today our class made a scarecrow using ....
- Liam's mask - James' shirt - straw - old newspapers - Connor's Mexican hat - An old scarf - old trousers - gloves - a burst basketball - 2 wooden planks - Plastic bags - Cling film The first thing we did was cut the wood to the right size. Then we nailed the wood together. Next we filled the bags with newspapers for the body an legs . Then we attached it to the wooden planks. After that we used the burst basketball and mask for the head and attached it to the planks. It looked scary now! After that we put the gloves on along with the shirt and trousers. And we put straw in the gaps. There are pictures of us making the scarecrow and of it when it was finished. Last week was Active Schools week. People came in to Scoil Na Mainistreach to teach us about what they coach. We done football with Gavin and Matthew from Ballyoulster Football Club. Ger taught circuit training to us. We have been doing laps around the school and we have a record of how many laps we do in a day. Below we have a gallery of what we have did last week.

I wrote to Brendan Gleeson because he is a brilliant actor. He played in Harry Potter the forth movie. I chose him because he is funny and scary. I wrote to Brendan a few days ago and I got this picture back from him. I was very happy with the picture and the autograph.
Last Tuesday I got a letter back from Tj Reid. We got to write to our favourite famous person so I picked Tj Reid. The reason I picked him is because I think he is the best hurler ever. I was delighted when I got a birthday card back from him. At first I wondered how he knew it was my birthday. But then knew it was my grandparents. I was very proud of my card from Tj Reid.
The Sliabh na mBan was an armoured car used by the British army. When Ireland won independence we bought 13 from the British . One of them The Big Fella was used to protect Michael Collins on his travels. The car that visited us in school is a replica built by Leixlip historian Dennis McCarthy and local Councillor Anthony Larkin. They brought the car into the school on Friday morning and everybody in the school came out to see it. Dennis gave talks to all the classes explaining the history of the car and how they made the replica. He had a lot of interesting facts and information. It was brilliant to see it and made a special day even more memorable.
Two weeks ago our class wrote to famous people. We have got two replies so far. We have got a letter back from Michael D Higgins and Shane Long. Our class mascot Disco Bear was delighted with all the letters from famous people. We have learned so much about writing letters. We are still waiting for some more to come back. For more information click here to go to the Disco Bear page.
My name is Steven Reid and I won a trophy for boxing It's my first trophy. I was so happy when I won. I won it in a competition in Ballymore in Hollywood in County Wicklow. My boxing club is in Clane County Kildare. I showed the trophy to my school. When I was going to the competition I was nervous but when I was fighting I was excited. When I was going in to the ring it was fun. He beat me in the first round, I won the second and third round. Everyone who was fighting got a trophy. There was 27 fights. I was the fifth fight and the ages was 8 and up. There was gold and silver trophy's. My friends Preetham, Gowtham and I (Saket) performed on stage at the Ugadi Festival and got a trophy for dancing. Ugadi is the Indian New Year. We have been practising for 4 weeks. Above are pictures of us with the trophy.
Planning for Active School Week 2016 is underway. It will take place in Scoil Na Mainistreach from the 9th to 13th May. 4th Class boys will be helping teachers organise the week which was a huge success last year. The ASW initiative is about providing FUN and INCLUSIVE physical activity opportunities for ALL members of the school community. It allows schools to reinforce the message that not only is physical activity good for you but it also very enjoyable. It provides schools with an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about the physical activity opportunities that are available in their locality and to work collaboratively with students, parents and members of the community. If any parents feel they could contribute to the organisation of or running of an event during Active Week, email Mr Minnock at [email protected] and I will get in contact with you.
This Friday 11th of March we are having a non uniform day in aid of Downs Syndrome Ireland. Mr Mescal a teacher in our school is cycling to Galway and back after Easter as part of the Galway Cycle an annual charity event organised by students of Maynooth University. Donations can be made on Friday and we look forward to supporting this worthy cause The Confirmation for 6th class boys takes place tomorrow. When the boys and their families are finished in the church they will come back to the school for refreshments . Mrs Corrigan has asked us if we could bake or donate cakes, buns ,sandwiches etc. They can be dropped in to the office in the morning.
We have started to learn the words of Oró Sé do Bheatha Bhaile the famous Irish song written by Padraig Pearse. During the flag presentation next Tuesday all boys in the school will sing it. Below is a version of the song sung by Ronnie Drew and The Dubliners. Underneath is a copy of the words. Boys need to spend a few minutes each night practising what they learned during the day.
Last week Mr.Murray from M.U. Barnhall RFC came into our school to teach us rugby. It takes place during our P.E hours. It is very exciting. Last week he taught us the rules of tag rugby. You can only pass the ball backwards if you pass it forward you get a foul against you. To tackle a player you have to pull their tag off. When you are tagged you have to return to where you were tagged. You restart by throwing the ball to one of your team mates. We really enjoyed last weeks games and are looking forward to doing it again in the coming weeks.
Today we started reading Molly's Diary a children's novel based on the Easter 1916 Rising written by author Patricia Murphy. Tonights homework is based on reading the first extract from Molly's Diary up to page 15 and finding the information asked for in the document below. In the next two weeks we will be celebrating fair trade fortnight. We are learning about Fairtrade with the green schools committee. Fair trade is about ensuring that farmers around the world get a fair price for goods that they produce. You can recognise fair trade products with the fair trade symbol pictured above. As a project over the next to week we are asked to come up with ideas of how to use fair trade products in deserts, smoothies, fruit salads etc.The green school committee will have prizes for the most creative ideas. Boys can send in pictures of their finished products either by email or on a usb key. If anyone is looking for an idea a sample video of chocolate banana pops made with fair trade bananas and fair trade chocolate can be seen below! Banana Pops On Thursday Ciaran from Leixlip fire station came to give a talk about fire safety. He gave us advice on what to do if a fire happened. His motto was Get Out, Stay Out, Get the fire brigade out. Make a plan in case a fire starts. Get a fire assembly point outside. At night plug out all electrical items so that it is less likely to happen. We really enjoyed the talk and we feel a lot safer around fires thanks to Ciaran advice. |
