Quiz On the weekend I visited my Granny and Granddad. I was talking with them about 1916 and my Granddad remembered that he had a Webly that had been given to him by my great, great Granddad's friend who used it in the GPO in 1916 . We looked it up in class this morning and the gun I think is a Mark 1. In the next few weeks I hope to find out more information about the gun and the man who used it . Aaron
Last night boys looked up information on the buildings used during the 1916 Rising. Some great information and interesting facts were reported to the class today on Boland's Mill, Jacobs Biscuit Factory, Dublin Castle, Liberty Hall and The Four Courts.
Some boys found out that relatives of theirs had worked in the biscuit factory while another relative of a boy was killed while going to Boland's Mill to get bread. Tonight boys are going to research some of the people involved in the build up to and during rising. We watched part of the RTE documentary on 1916 in class and identified some key people. The leaders identified are Group 1: Padraig Pearse and John Redmond Group 2: John Devoy and Thomas Clarke Group 3: Countess Marckievickz Group 4: James Connoly and Eoin McNeill Thomas McDonagh and Roger Casement The boys have started to learn about the 1916 Rising this week. We have begun by looking at the background and over the next few weeks will learn about various aspects of the ising.
The boys next project will be on the Rising and will be due in on Monday 14th March. Projects can be on any aspect of 1916, the events, leaders or individuals who took part in it.
Sat 6th February is a date we will never forget. We preformed in the R.D.S in front of 7,500 people. The night turned out to be better than we imagined. The stage was massive. The crowd was huge and we all felt a little nervous at the beginning.
Once the singing started all the nerves went away.Greg Beardsell was our conductor and he made us feel very confident. Having the Cross Border Orchestra playing the music was very special. One of the highlights of the night was during the song Imagine (See Below) the people in the audience put on the lights on their phones as we were singing. Our parents ,families and friends who came to see us singing all really enjoyed the show. DVD' s of the show have been ordered and we look forward to watching it when it arrives. For now we have the memories of a brilliant night and we look forward to doing it all again next year. See a below couple of short video clips that we found on Twitter capturing some of the magic of the night. Thanks in particular to Graham Mulcahy for the Imagine Video which captures the magic of the audience response and Pat Hayes for Irelands Call.
Today we were allowed pick the four balls for the lotto. The numbers drawn were 26, 13, 28, 10 and the boys who picked the balls were Ross, Jamie L, Alex and Oisin. You can see the pictures that we took below.
The big day is almost here. After months of practice we are finally ready to perform on the big stage in the R.D.S.
We will meet in the school tomorrow at 4.15. We must wear a white shirt and dark trousers. On stage we will be sitting in the Green Section. This will help our parent and friends know where we are on stage and if they want to pick seats in front of the green section they should have a better view. The show starts at 8.pm and will be over at 10.20pm. We hope to be back at school by 11.30.pm. We look forward to a great night and we hope you enjoy every minute of it. P.S. When we return to Scoil Na Mainistreach boys can be collected from Bus 20. A once in a lifetime opportunity came about for some boys today with the chance to sing on live radio. KFM radio invited boys to perform our own Christmas Song live on air in their studios. Unfortunately we couldn't bring everyone however the 10 boys who went down did themselves and the class proud. Presenter Ciara Plunkett interviewed the boys on air before they gave an outstanding rendition of their catchy tune accompanied by our top class musicians Sean, Ryan, Connor, Aaron and Mr Mescal. The pictures above capture the pre-show nervousness in the waiting room and also the composed performance in the studio. Thanks to producer Laura and presenter Ciara for inviting the boys down and helping make great memories for them. Also thanks to Ryans Dad, Keith for giving boys a lift to the studios and helping to tune the guitars beforehand. Click here on this link to listen to the boys performance! Dance moves for our Peace Proms songs are now up on the Peace Proms page. Boys will learn them in class first and must practice them at home every night!
Tickets are now on sale for our concert on the 6th February at 8pm in the RDS. The following link can be used to purchase tickets http://peaceproms.com/buy-tickets/ Over the last month the 5 groups in class began writing Christmas songs .

It was a great success with a large turnout of our parents and pupils from other classes in the school. The projects could not have been done without the tremendous help from many members of our families and friends. Thanks to everyone for the effort, the boys really enjoyed the experience. Just a reminder about the Science exhibition tomorrow and Mr Marken's class are holding a cake sale . The cake sale is in aid of Straight Ahead Charity. If anyone wants donate cakes for the cake sale just bring them to the office or Mr Marken's class. Please visit the cake sale if you can before / after the science exhibition.
Last month Mary Shaw organised the annual Shoebox Appeal for team hope. We collected over 130 boxes full of toys and gifts for boys and girls in poorer parts of the world. We enjoyed being part of it and thank Mary and C.J. in 6th class for making it happen. Below are pictures of the shoebox collection.

Today we had a visit from James the Juggling Scientist. He made science very fun and interesting. First trick he juggled with bowling pins it was amazing .He did lots of other tricks like, juggling, unicycle balancing. Two boys from our class Ross and Temi were volunteers and did science tricks like dropping two bottles at once to see if they would land at the same time and then filling one bottle and they still dropped at the same time because of the gravity. He told us about Magnetism which is pushing + pulling so if you put two magnets together they will go together unless South and South go together because they are the same and they will go away from each other. Ms O'Brien balanced a cup of water on a tray while spinning it around in a circle. Below are pictures of the amazing Juggling Scientist and a presentation by Sean and Alex on what they learned . The date for our Peace Proms performance has been confirmed today. The boys will be on stage in the R.D.S. on Saturday night, 6th February at 8pm.
Tickets for the concert can be purchased on line from the Peace Proms Website. Today we learned how to add a switch to a simple circuit. Mr.Minnock gave each group a cork, two thumbtacks and a paper clip and asked us to to make our own switch.
You will need , 3 pieces of wire and a battery ,a battery holder and a bulb and bulb holder and a cork and paper clip and thumbtacks. Follow same instructions as the simple circuit. Remove 1 wire from battery. Attach a new wire to the battery. Insert thumbtacks in to your cork (not the county). Connect 1 end of the paperclip to 1 thumbtack. Connect 1 wire from battery to 1 thumbtack. Connect 2nd wire from bulb to the 2nd thumbtack. Position paper clip to connect both thumbtacks. Electricity will now flow and the bulb will light. Yesterday Mr. Minnock showed us how to make a simple circuit.
What you will need: Bulb Battery 2 pieces of wire Bulb holder Battery holder To Do: Put the battery in the battery holder. Connect the wires to the battery holder. Insert the bulb in the bulb holder. Then connect the other end of the wire to the bulb holder. Then you will see that the bulb lights up. Then there is a problem but we have a solution. Problem: There is no off switch for the bulb. Solution: Mr. Minnock will show us how to add an off switch to the bulb. This Friday morning we went outside to the school orchard. Mr Minnock took up a hole in the grass [carefully]. Then we put a little bit of compost and then put bulbs on top of the compost and after we put the grass back on top of the bulbs and compost. We hope they will fully grow in spring.
On Thursday I went to Kilmainham Jail. In Kilmainham jail there was a museum and a tour. We went to both. First we went to the museum. We saw old clothes, books and sheets from when the jail was in use. After we went on the tour. On the tour the guide told us about all the people that were in Kilmainham Jail. Later the guide brought us to the courtyard where the prisoners would have been shot or prosecuted. After we went to a huge room where all the 96 jail cells were. I went into 13 of them. There are some pictures below. We also saw the proclamation on the wall. In some cells there was a bed and a tiny window. And in others there would only be a candle that would have to last you over 2 weeks!! I had a great time.
