Every now and again an event takes place in school life that leaves a lasting impression on everyone involved. Yesterdays inaugural Maynooth Cycle was one such occasion that will live long in the memory of pupils and teachers alike.
Organised by Mr Mescal, 30 boys marshalled by 6 teachers cycled to Maynooth University and back. The boys received sponsorship from family and friends totalling €329 which they presented to Aaron the Vice President of the Galway Cycle group in Maynooth University. The Galway Cycle group every year cycle to Galway from Maynooth University raising funds for charities. This year they raised money for The Irish Guide Dogs. Teachers Mr Mescal, Mr Bracken, Mrs Marken and Mr. Curtin who acted as marshalls for our cycle were themselves part of this years Galway Cycle and contributed to their raising of over €115,000.
Led off by local Guard Aidan in the squad car the boys were cheered all the way out the gate by their fellow pupils. Joining the other teachers as marshalls on the day were Mr. Moyles and Mr. Marken both keen cyclists. Local bike shop Bike Worx staff Noel and Jason drove their van acting as a support vehicle for riders and provided back up for any cyclist who needed it.
On arrival in Maynooth the boys were met by members of the Galway Cycle committee who laid on much needed refreshments for the cyclists. After the presentation of money, and some speeches the group headed back to Scoil Na Mainistreach where once again a welcoming party of pupils and teachers were out in full voice.
Everyone involved in yesterday’s cycle has spoken about the enormous sense of achievement they felt after completing the cycle. The Maynooth Cycle is now certain to become a fixture in the Active Week Calendar. Mr Mescal has already spoken of how we can build on this year’s experience and make future Maynooth Cycles even better.
Well done to everyone on a successful day. Special thanks to Mr. Mescal for his organising of the event, the other teacher marshalls for helping ensure the safety of the pupils, Bike Worx for their support on the day, Garda Aidan for his professionalism throughout the journey ensuring a clear route to Maynooth and most of all each and every one of the boys who cycled for their effort and impeccable behaviour all through. They were a credit to themselves, their families and the school.
