Once again its time for our annual shoebox appeal in association with Team Hope. Mary Shaw who works in Scoil Na Mainistreach organises this collection for charity. It has grown from strength to strength in recent years. Last year the boys in Scoil Na Mainistreach contributed over 100 boxes to be distributed to boys and girls their own age in poorer parts of the world. Details of how to make any contributions can be found on the forms the boys have brought home with them and also on the pictures attached. Boxes need to be brought to the school before the 10th of November when the Team Hope lorry will call to collect them from us.
On Friday we went on a nature walk to Castletown House. We were joined by Mrs Fleming who gave us a full run down on the nature of the area along with some history too. The boys have reports written which can be viewed below, just click on the links to open.
We read about the Tuatha de Danann in class today. Read the following information about these ancient people here, write 10 sentences about it and draw a picture in SESE copies.
Last Thursday we had a visit from Eliud Too. Eliud is the current Dublin City Marathon champion he has returned to defend his title. Last year he visited Scoil na Mainistreach and he enjoyed his visit so much he returned. He and his coach James Walters talked to us about winning the marathon last year and what life has been like since. He joined us on our own Lillywhite Lap, a once in a life time opportunity to run with a champion athlete. We look forward to seeing Eliud running the marathon and hopefully winning again.
Friday was a very special day in the history of Scoil Na Mainistreach. 2 members of the defence forces visited and presented the school with the National Flag and a copy of the 1916 Proclamation. A full report has been published below, written by Saket Cilaveni while the video will help relive the momentous occasion. This year the boys of Rang4SnaM will once again take part in the nationwide #anfomhar, Signs of Autumn, Twitter project. Primary schools across the country are taking part in this collaborative project which will link pupils, schools and communities together through the use of modern technology.
Boys simply look for Signs of Autumn all around them and take a picture. Parents can then email the picture to the class email (address above) and we will tweet the picture from the class twitter account @Rang4SnaM. Further details of the project can be found on the Seomra Ranga website. As mentioned earlier this is our second year to take part in the project. Pictures taken by boys last year can be seen here. Amhrán na bhfiann was written by Peadar Kearney in 1907. Tomorrow we will sing Amhrán na bhfiann as part of the flag presentation to our school. It will be an extra special occasion for Conall in our class as he will be singing the song written by his Great Great Grand Uncle.
As part of the commemoration of the 1916 rising, a soldier from the defence forces will present the National flag to our school in a special ceremony. The ceremony will take place this Friday 2nd of October in the school hall at 9.30 am. If any family has connections with the 1916 rising email [email protected] and we will pass it on to Mrs Fleming and the history squad who will be working on a project about 1916.
Scoil Na Mainistreach is making a Cookbook! This Monday 28th September is the closing date. Their are 10 entries in already and we hope to have a few more to enter on Monday.
As part of the ceremonies to commemorate the 1916 rising, all schools in Ireland will receive an Irish flag from the defence forces, We will receive ours next Friday, October 2nd. We will sing the national anthem on the day as part of the presentation ceremony. The boys are currently learning it in school and should practice it for homework.
