Sports Day took place yesterday for 4th Class boys. Organised as always by Mr Gavin, it took place in glorious sunshine. Boys took part in Tug of War, Obstacle Course, Penalty Kicks, Gaelic Kick, Novelty Races, Relay Races, 100 M and 200 M races and finally the long jump. It was a very enjoyable day with everybody doing their best in each event and helping their own coloured team win as many points as possible. Congrats to David from our class who played for the school hurlers in their victory over Naas in the Cumann Na mBunscol final yesterday. This is the first time in 10 years that we have won the U-13 Hurling final and we are very proud of David and all the boys on the team and the Teachers in charge Mr Curtin and Mr Bracken. The boys went on a victory parade today in front of the whole school during Sports Day. Click on the link below to see footage of the parade with some famous music playing for the boys in the background.
VICTORY PARADE On Saturday some boys went to An Ríocht in County Down. The main teams were Celbridge, An Ríocht and Rossa Óg. We had two teams. One team made it the cup final and the other team made it to the shield semis. Celbridge shield team should have won the semis but didn’t. It was a good game but there were lots of fouls.
Our cup team lost in the final to Rossa Óg. It was a close game and a goal in the last minute for Rossa Óg meant they were winners by one point. We had a great day and really enjoyed it. We got to draw the Lotto Numbers for this weeks school lotto today! The numbers drawn were 2, 12, 20 and 21. Today a partial eclipse of the sun took place over Ireland. For most of the morning it was very cloudy and we could see nothing of the eclipse. The classroom went very dark. We went outside and there was an eerie coldness and calmness. The birds stopped singing. At about 10.10 the clouds began to disappear and the eclipse became visible. Stephen who was outside our classroom noticed a reflection of the eclipse in the classroom window. It was a perfect way to view the eclipse as it is dangerous to look directly at the sun. All the class got to look at it and we were soon joined by other 3rd and 4th classes. Have a look at our slideshow below to see the eclipse in Scoil Na Mainistreach. Q4 a-j Q5 a-l We have entered some T-Shirt designs in the Cool T's competition run by the boys in 6th class. They are looking for some cool designs to put on T-Shirts which will then go on sale. Our T-Shirts can be seen in the Gallery below. Mick and Ed from Celbridge Tennis Club took us for a tennis lesson. They gave a short demonstration of a tennis rally. Mick challenged Mr. Minnock to a game, they drew 15-15! We played hitters & catchers. We really enjoyed it. They have an open day on Monday between 4-6pm. All details on the leaflet down above. Below in our slideshow are a selection of pictures from our very enjoyable lesson today. Our Skype call to Kenya has made international news. Skype Classroom has picked up on our story and published it on their website. The boys from rang4snam were very happy when we found out about it. To look at our story online along with other stories from around the globe Click Here .
Last week before our midterm break we completed Week 2 of our Lillywhite Lap. We reached the equivalent distance of having run from Celbridge to Leixlip which is 6.7Km or 17 Laps of the school. Maynooth is our next destination on the Lillywhite Lap and we hope to be there by Friday weather permitting. The route will see us on our virtual run, exploring the Royal Canal. We will research information on the Royal Canal and Maynooth Town and add them to our records which can be seen HERE.
In total the boys have a combined distance of 266.8 KM covered in just 2 weeks! On Friday last there was a memorial service for Jean de Kock a Belgian refugee in Celbridge during Would War 1. All the boys were invited to attend. Mark and Oisín from Rang4SnaM went with their Dads to the ceremony and they gave us the following report.
He died 100 years ago last week of typhoid and is buried in Donaghcomper cemetery. The History squad from 6th class with Mrs Fleming organised the ceremony . The Belgian Consul Mme Scheers attended the ceremony with her husband Mr Suotamo. The Celbridge History society were in attendance as well as local media and journalists form RTE's History Show who will have a report on next Sunday's show . Fr kevin said a few words at the end. A wreath in the Belgian colours red, yellow and black was placed on his grave . We got to help the history squad carrying flowers. Afterwards we were invited to Celbridge Manor hotel where we had sausages and chips. Overall it was an interesting day. We learned a lot about our histrory from the boys in 6th class. We look forward to being part of the history squad when we are in 6th class. Today we had a Skype call with Eliud Too and his coach James Walters. Eliud won the Dublin Marathon last October and 3 days before that race he visited us in Scoil Na Mainistreach. They are currently in camp in Iten, the famous town in Kenya where the top Kenyan athletes train. They took us on a Skype tour around the training camp to see their training facilities. On the tour we were introduced to other athletes Bernard Kiptum, Robert Kaptingei and none other than Alex Too, younger brother of Eliud who is also training in Iten and will make his international debut in a few years. The boys in Rang4SnaM had many questions prepared for Eliud. He told us about winning the Dublin City Marathon, the celebrations, his plans for Spring time running in America and how he is hopeful of running in future Olympics. Conor outlined our Lillywhite Laps running programme to Eliud and on his signal we were able to launch it on our class website. We said our goodbyes for the time being and we very much look forward to following Eliuds progress through 2015 and speaking to him again sometime before the summer. Mrs.Fleming has set up a History Squad for the boys in 6th class .The reason for the History Squad is that we are entering an All Ireland competition about local history .Our topic is the Belgian refugees in Celbridge during World War 1.
We went on a trip to Donaghcomper to find the grave of Jean de Kock, a painter and father of five who was buried in Donaghcomper 100 years ago on Friday. We are holding a ceremony on Friday the 20th (February) at 10:00 am where we will put flowers on a grave for all the unmarked graves in Donaghcomper and the Belgian Ambassador to Ireland will attend. Everyone is welcome to pay their respects. Mrs.Fleming has got flowers in the Belgian colours to lay on the unmarked grave. By Eimhin Carey Inspired by a visit from Eliud To last October, 4 days before he won the Dublin City Marathon the boys of Rang4SnaM have taken on a long distance running project of their own. The Lillywhite Lap will see the boys running laps of the Scoil Na Ministreach building on a daily basis from Spring to Summer.
The overall aim of this project is to increase fitness levels, put into practice measuring skills learned in Mathematics and discover information about towns and villages around County Kildare. They have measured the distance around the school at 400M, researched the distances between Celbridge and other towns around County Kildare, calculated the number of laps of the school required to run these distances and have taken off! Daily records are being kept of the number of laps run and total distances covered. As boys approach the various towns and villages en route they will research information on these places and record various facts and findings. Their progress can be followed on the Projects page on this website and follow the links to The Lillywhite Lap. We are also delighted to announce that Eliud To who inspired the boys to take up running will join us tomorrow via Skype call from Kenya to officially launch the Lillywhite Lap. The boys have lots of questions prepared for Eliud and look forward to hearing about his celebrations since winning the Dublin City Marathon and also his plans for the future. On January 15 2015 at 9:15 we marked a line of the Suns shadow on the wall. Just over a month later on February 17 2015 we marked at the exact same time in the morning. The shadow line of the Sun had moved 97cm down the wall. Due to how the Earth is tilted in the winter the Sun is lower in the sky. As Spring progresses the Sun gets higher in the sky as our part of the Earth tilts back towards the Sun reducing the length of the shadow.
Rugby coaching started on Tuesday last for the boys in Rang4snaM. Organised as always by NUIMBarnhall RFC, coaches Garreth and Gearóid both players with the club and past pupils of Scoil Na Mainistreach, will be coaching the boys the skills of the game for the next 5 weeks. It was non stop action in the hall for the hour and the boys thoroughly enjoyed it. Have a look at the pictures below to see some of the fun and enjoyment the boys experienced. Last Saturday 31st January was a day that we had been preparing for, for the last five months. We had learned 13 songs and lots of dance moves perfected. After the five months we were ready to entertain an audience of thousands on an enormous stage in the R.D.S.
So on the day all 4th and 5th class boys gathered in the school at 4.30 pm. Then at 5pm we started getting on to the bus. When we arrived at the R.D.S we went straight into practise with all the other schools. We learned during the practise that the conductor was the man in charge. After the practise we had lunch. Then we were ready to perform. .The show began at 8 pm. We began with the Happy song. One of the Highlights of the night came when during the Monster Medley characters from the Adams Family and Ghostbusters ran among the audience as we were singing. The night finished with us singing ''May we never have to say goodbye''. The Peace Proms was a memorable night. Family and friends who came to see the show really enjoyed it . We would all really love to take part in the Peace Proms again. Click on the following links to see short video clips of our memorable night Frozen Ireland's Call You'll Never Walk Alone Last Thursday before the Peace Proms we ran a cake sale with other 4th and 5th classes. We wanted to raise money to pay for the buses to get to the peace proms. We took turns selling the cakes . The money raised was amazing. Parents donated cakes, muffins and more. Special thanks to Halo Café for those delicious scones. We raised over 1300 euro. Thank you so much to everyone that helped us. We raised more than enough money for the buses to bring us there and back.
Thank you. Please Note the Following Arrangements for travelling to and from the RDS on Saturday
Boys should wear uniform trousers and a white Shirt / T-Shirt. For their lunch boys are asked not to bring lunch boxes but to bring something that can be thrown into the bin when they are finished. It promises to be a spectacle, a night that the boys and families will remember forever. Enjoy. We are reading a book called Kensuke's Kingdom. We have read up to the part where a boy called Michael get stranded on an island in the middle of the Coral Sea. We were thinking about how Michael could send a message from the island. We decided that he could send a message in a bottle. We made some messages to go in the go in bottles. You can see them in the gallery below. We did very well! |
